Digestive tract: The canal from mouth through stomach and intestines to the anus
Introduction: The digestive tract or "gastrointestinal tract" is the long passage that takes food from the mouth all the way through with wastes coming out of the anus. The basic sequence is mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. Various organs such as the pancreas and liver secrete enzymes used in the digestive process. The muscular process that moves food through the digestive tract is called peristalsis.
