Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by New Kerala Health India): A study involving rats found that inactivity was related to insulin sensitivity. The longer the period of inactivity, the lower the insulin sensitivity. Reduced insulin sensitivity may be associated with an increased risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity and hypertension. Insulin takes sugar out of the blood stream and puts it into the muscle where it is used as energy. Inactivity results in a reduction in this process leaving more sugar in the blood stream. It was found that even two days of inactivity resulted in reduced efficiency of the insulin.
