Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Science Daily): Weight loss programs are heavily commercialized with consumers having only advertisements to gauge the effectiveness of the various diet programs available. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine have assessed a diet program from each category of non-medical medically supervised, Internet-based and organized self-help. It was found that of the non-medical programs (such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and LQ Weight Loss) Weight Watchers was the most tested program with subjects losing about 5% or about 10 pounds of their starting weight in 3 to 6 months. The costs involved in Jenny Craig and LA Weight Loss were much higher than Jenny Craig but relevant research based figures to prove their effectiveness. The weight loss amongst medically supervised plans such as Health Management Resources and OPTIFAST was 15-25% or 30-50 pounds of initial weight in 3 to 6 months. These diets were based primarily on liquid diets and had a program cost ranging from $1700 to $2200 for the initial 3 months. This program was deemed useful for obese people who had already developed obesity-related problems such as hypertension or diabetes. However, the downside is the majority of subjects put back on about 50% of the weight they had lost within two years. This program is especially prone to regain of weight lost. No useful scientific evidence was available to assess Internet-based weight loss plans or self-help programs such as Overeaters Anonymous but they are certainly a viable option for people wanting to explore weight loss ideas without going to any expense.
