Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Seattle Times): The National Cancer Institute is funding research into the potential of using blood tests to determine the presence or risk of cancer. Researchers believe that this may be done by identifying blood proteins associated with different cancers. This will allow early diagnosis, effective treatment and thus better survival rates. The first step the research team is covering is to identify proteins associated with breast, prostate, ovarian, colon, skin and lung cancer. Some protein identification systems are already in use but are very inaccurate (PSA test for prostate cancer and ovarian cancer detection).
