Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Health Day News): A report published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology suggested that people with certain skin disorders (eczema, atopic dermatitis), a weakened immune system or who take high-dose corticosteroids may put themselves at greater risk of complications if they have the live-virus smallpox vaccine. Mortality rates among children with atopic dermatitis are highest in those under 5 years. Atopic dermatitis sufferers face a greater risk of developing vaccinia infections. They are also more likely to spread the virus. It is also important for people to avoid having the smallpox vaccine if someone in their household has a compromised immune system as the vaccinated person can transmit the virus through intimate contact.
