Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by PR Newswire): The results of a study published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine indicate that 80% of subjects who complained of sinus headache actually had symptoms of migraine. Sinus headache is not very common. If facial pain and congestion are present, sinus headache is often diagnosed but these symptoms may also be associated with migraine. Other migraine symptoms include pain on one side of head, mild to severe pain, throbbing pain, increase pain when moving or bending over, nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity and aura. However, only 24% of subjects diagnosed with migraine had an aura present so the symptoms may vary greatly from person to person. Migraines can cause a stuffy nose, runny nose and watery eyes. It may be set of by allergies or weather changes. Migraines are known to be underdiagnosed, misdiagnosed and undertreated. Examination of 1,200 subjects found 1 in 4 did not have their migraine properly diagnosed. The most commonly used medication prescribed for migraine is Imitrex Tablets which helps to alleviate symptoms of acute migraine. The medication should not be used to treat sinus headaches nor should it be used by people with a history of some types of heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud syndrome or uncontrolled blood pressure. Other people who should consult their physician before taking the medication are those who are pregnant, nursing, on other medications or who have risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol, diabetes or smoke.
