Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Medical News Today): Japanese researchers are already aware that risk factors for metabolic syndrome are obesity, lack of exercise and genetic factors and metabolic syndrome sufferers have an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, vascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Researchers have tried to work out the mechanism of this process. They found that the fat cells in obese mice produced higher levels of the toxic reactive oxygen species and the enzyme NADPH oxidase. Fat cells also produce less antioxidative enzymes which destroy the reactive oxygen species which leads to oxidative stress. Researchers found that administering an antioxidant (apocynin) to inhibit NADPH oxidase, they were able to reduce reactive oxygen species production by fat cells which in turn reduced diabetes and fat levels in the blood and liver. This discovery could lead to a potential therapy for metabolic syndrome associated with obesity by involving antioxidants.
