Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Medical College of Wisconsin): A large US study has found that farm children were much less likely to suffer from asthma or wheezing than their rural counterparts. City people had an even greater prevalence of asthma and wheezing. The effect was strongest in younger children who lived on a farm. The protective factors that farm children are exposed to may be an increased number of siblings, increased likelihood of being breastfed and having outdoor pets and less likelihood of attending daycare. The results will appear in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
