Medical News Summary: Study results in The International Journal of Cancer indicate that red wine consumption may have a protective effect against male prostate cancer due to the polyphenols in the red wine. Beer and spirits did not reduce the risk of prostate cancer at all but moderate red wine consumption decreased the risk by 44%, light consumption by 27% and heavy consumption (15 or more glasses per week) by 37%. Studies have also suggested that wine can reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease and osteoporosis in menopausal women due the wines phytoestrogen content. Researcher not that excess wine consumption may however have no benefit or a negative effect on health.
