Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by The Journal Times): The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is aimed at helping people reduce their blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels. Limiting salt intake can reduce blood pressure but not to the same degree as the DASH diet which promotes fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products. This diet allows for high consumption of minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium which alleviate blood pressure problems. The DASH diet improves cholesterol diets because of the high fiber, low fat content. The diet also increases the consumption of natural phytochemicals which is believed to inhibit the development of many conditions including cancer
