Medical News Summary: Colon cancer gene identified

About: Colon cancer gene identified
Date: 22 December 2004
Source: Science Daily
Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Science Daily): A gene (15-PGDH) which is very similar to Celebrex has been found to be abundant in normal cells and very low in colon cancer tumor cells. Injecting the gene into the tumor appeared to halt the tumor growth in mice. The gene controls the COX-2 enzyme of which increased levels are present in human colon tumors. It appears that if there is no gene to inhibit the increased level of COX-2, the tumor starts to develop. The gene is in turn activated by another gene called TGF-beta signal and it is the lack of this gene that starts the tumor process.
