Medical News Summary (summary of medical news story as reported by Fox News): The CDC has issued warnings about exposing infants to adults with coughs which may be undiagnosed whooping cough or pertussis. Infants are particularly susceptible to whooping cough until they have their third vaccination at 6 months. Whooping cough is characterized by severe coughing which is often followed by a whooping sound during inhalation. An infant died late last year after being exposed to adults with undiagnosed whooping cough. Other at risk population groups are older children and adults who havenít been vaccinated. It has been reported by researchers that although vaccination rates have increased, the incidence of whooping cough has gone from 1,248 cases in 1981 to about 10,000 cases annually from 1996-2001 with the majority of cases being in infants under 6 months or children over 7 years.
