Mutation: An error or change in a gene or DNA sequence
Introduction: A mutation is damage or malformation of a gene altering the DNA code A mutation occurs in a DNA sequence when one of the base pairs is copied incorrectly, resulting in a gene that is not the same as the original. Mutations are very common, but most are harmless. However, harmful mutations can occur leading to genetic diseases and mutations are implicated in the cause of cancer. Many monogenic diseases originally began from mutations. Newly acquired mutations can also cause sporadic genetic disease.
