Medical Dictionary: Hypoglycemia unawareness

Introduction: This is a condition common with diabetes where the body loses the ability to recognize lows sugar hypos, making a diabetic hypo even more dangerous. While rare at diagnosis of diabetes, the body's natural responses to low sugars (hormones glucagon and epinephrine) gradually become less sensitive to lows. Eventually, a person can go dangerously low without seeing any noticable symptoms until too late. Unawareness seems to get worse the more lows you have, and is partially reversible, so that by avoiding lows you can often regain some awareness. But it's a vicious cycle, hypos leading to unawareness leading to more hypos, and this requires careful blood sugar monitoring to reverse.
