Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) (condition): BSE or "mad cow disease" in cows; may be linked to variant CJD in humans.
Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) (condition): One of the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies caused by prions (abnormal proteins) attacking the brain. More commonly known as "mad cow disease", this disease became famous because of an epidemic in British cows (and also parts of Europe). The disease affects cows but not humans. However, there are concerns that BSE may cause variant CJD in humans, though the link remains a subject of debate.
