Medical Dictionary: Apoptosis

Apoptosis: Cell's internal "suicide" mechanism causing death of the cell
Introduction: Apoptosis is the cellular internal mechanism whereby a cell can cause its own death. It is a distinct sequence of events leading to the cell's death, triggered by various low-level cell events. Apoptosis is an extremely important research topic and the exact mechanism is still under investigation. Prevention of apoptosis is important in keeping cells alive in various conditions, such as autoimmune disease or radiation injury. Certain treatments may actually seek to cause apoptosis, to kill bad cells, such as in treatment of cancer.
