Medical Dictionary: Acquired

Acquired: Referring to a medical condition occuring after birth and not inherent.
Introduction: A medical condition is acquired if it occurs due to some external trigger or action. For example, genetic diseases or in-born birth defects are not acquired. Contagious or infectious diseases are acquired. The disease AIDS is called "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome" to distinguish it from the rarer non-acquired genetic immune deficiency syndromes such as SCID (bubble-boy).
