About underlying conditions: With a diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, it is important to consider whether there is an underlying condition causing Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. These are other medical conditions that may possibly cause Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. For general information on this form of misdiagnosis, see Underlying Condition Misdiagnosis or Overview of Misdiagnosis

Underlying conditions discussion: There has been concern that CJD could be transmitted to people who may have eaten beef products contaminated with the BSE agent. By May 2, 2000, England had officially reported 56 people who were confirmed to have developed a new form of CJD at an unusually young age. They had not received any therapy known to cause CJD such as growth hormone, corneal transplantation, or a dura mater graft. For the 54 of these patients on whom studies of brain tissue were available, the studies confirmed the presence of a new variant form of CJD. 1
